What is lobby scraping in online games?
Why operators bother
Information has resale value. Knowing who is in queue, what they play, and when they are online powers services sold to players who want an edge. The scraper is the supply chain for half a dozen gray-market products.
The infrastructure cost
Scrapers do not browse like players. They poll endpoints at rates no human generates, often around the clock. Server capacity you provisioned for players ends up serving machines, and peak-hour lag gets blamed on the wrong cause.
Filtering without hurting players
Legitimate clients are chatty but human-paced. Scraping fleets betray themselves through request regularity, endpoint selection, and session patterns. Scoring API traffic separately from gameplay traffic removes the load without touching a single real match.
